2 November 2025 at 12:00 – 13:00 Learning about Quakers

How Quakers Helped Shape the 18th century English Garden

Venue: Richmond Quaker Meeting House, 1 Retreat Road, Richmond TW9 1NN

Richmond Friend and Kew Gardens volunteer Ben Lamberton discusses the partnership of two Quakers who helped shaped British horticulture: Peter Collinson in London (1694 -1768) and John Bartram in Philadelphia. (1699 – 1777)
Ben writes: ''The Eighteenth Century saw the remarkable emergence of Quaker botanists.  This occurred on both sides of the Atlantic.  William Penn was a key facilitator in Pennsylvania, but the movement was prominent in England. Individuals including Peter Collinson, John Fothergill, William Curtis, Priscilla Wakefield and Thomas Backhouse, all Quakers, were pioneering botanists.
''Quaker plant hunters were prominent in America.  John Bartram and his son William Bartram, travelled in under-explored areas of what was to become the United States.  They collected hundreds of plants. The two communities came together in the extensive trade in plants initiated by the Bartrams and Peter Collinson.  Many trees and plants now in the UK are here because of that Quaker trade.
''Quaker reverence for nature was a common motivation both among British and American Quakers.  These botanists lay the basis for Quaker's commitment to the environment.''

Exploring passages from Quaker Faith & Practice

Venue: Online

Join Online Meeting (available shortly before event)

Each session a different friend chooses a passage from Quaker Faith & Practices, and invites others to share their thoughts. This week we will be looking at passage 25.06 in Quaker Faith & Practice:
If it is right that we should show love and compassion for people, surely it is right that we should extend our love and compassion to animals, who can feel fear and experience pain in much the same way as humans. They may not be able to speak, but we can certainly see fear in their eyes and demeanour. I feel that being a vegetarian is a natural progression from being a pacifist and a Quaker.

Vera Haley, 1988
